Digital Strategy
What is a Digital Strategy?
A digital strategy is a documented plan that defines how an organization will use data and technology to meet specific business objectives. It compares the capabilities the business needs against what current systems and practices can support, then sets out a phased path for closing the gaps.
Additionally, a digital strategy centers on asset information. It addresses how engineering data and asset records are created and maintained across the lifecycle, and which systems will serve as the source of truthWhat Is a Source of Truth? Questions It Answers
A digital strategy gives leadership documented answers to four questions:
- Where does the organization’s asset information and technology stand today?
- Which business capabilitiesWhat are Business Capabilities? Business capabilities descri... More matter most, and which are not supported by current workflows or systems?
- What should the target end state look like, including how systems and data will connect?
- In what order should the work happen, and what will it cost?
- Where does the organization stand against its competitors?
Core Components
Current State Assessment: A baseline review of existing systems and working practices. Assessments typically target specific areas such as asset information management, spare parts, operational readiness and mechanical integrity, and the results are compared against industry best practices to establish a maturity level.
Business Capability Model: A structured map of what the business needs to be able to do, such as maintaining an accurate asset register or receiving complete engineering data at handover. Each capability is ranked by its value to business objectives, and high-value capabilities with no current support become priorities.
Target End State: A shared definition of the future state, supported by a high-level architecture that shows how systems of record and data flows will connect across the digital ecosystem.
Phased Roadmap & Budget: An executable roadmap that sequences the work into phases, with detailed solution design coming before content enrichment and deployment. Each phase carries its own cost estimates and critical success factors.

The strategy identifies where teams will need support adopting new ways of working as well, which is why change enablement is planned as part of the strategy instead of after go-live.
