Single Pane of Glass

What Is a Single Pane of Glass?

A single pane of glass is a centralized dashboard that combines data, alerts and management tools from multiple separate systems into one unified view. Rather than switching between different applications to check on different parts of an operation, teams see everything they need from a single interface.

In environments where information lives across disconnected platforms, such as maintenance systems, document repositories and monitoring tools, a single pane of glass sits above those systems and pulls their outputs into one place without requiring anyone to log into each one individually.

What Sits Behind the Screen

A dashboard doesn’t become a single pane of glass just by displaying multiple systems side by side. Integration work has to happen first, and it typically covers three areas:

  • Data Connections: Each source system needs a way into the dashboard, built through a direct integration, an API or a shared data layer.
  • Common Structure: Data arriving from different systems has to be mapped to a consistent format, since a maintenance system and a monitoring tool won’t describe the same thing the same way on their own.
  • Refresh Schedule: The dashboard needs rules for how often it pulls new data, since a unified view built on stale information can lead to worse decisions than no dashboard at all.

Skip this groundwork and a dashboard can look unified on the surface while still showing disconnected or inconsistent data underneath.

What Distinguishes It From a Standard Dashboard

Not every multi-system display qualifies as a single pane of glass. A standard dashboard can pull in charts or widgets from several sources, but each one often still functions as its own isolated tile, requiring a separate login or a click-through to see the full detail behind it.

A true single pane of glass removes that separation. The data isn’t just displayed together, it’s structured to be read together, so a user can move from one system’s information to another’s within the same screen and the same context, without the underlying source system ever becoming visible as a distinct destination.

Where It’s Typically Applied

In industrial and asset-heavy environments, a single pane of glass is most often built around operational monitoring, combining inputs such as:

  • Equipment condition
  • Work order status
  • Safety alerts
  • Process data

The scope can extend further to include document or engineering data where a project or facility needs a shared reference point across teams.
