What is Asset Criticality?

Asset criticality is the process of determining how important a physical asset is to an organization’s operations. It establishes which assets require the greatest attention by evaluating the level of risk associated with their failure.

Rather than treating every asset equally, asset criticality helps organizations prioritize maintenance activities, operational resources and investment where they will have the greatest impact.

How It’s Assessed

Asset criticality is typically determined using a structured assessment that evaluates assets against consistent criteria (usually defined by the business). The result is a criticality ranking that can be applied across an asset base to support consistent decision-making.

A common misconception is that asset criticality is determined only by the consequences of failure. In practice, criticality is typically based on risk, which considers both the potential consequences of failure and the likelihood that the failure will occur.

An asset may have significant consequences if it fails, but if that failure is unlikely because of redundancy or proven reliability, it may not require the same level of attention as a higher-risk asset.

How Criticality Influences Asset Management

Criticality rankings are intended to support decisions throughout the asset lifecycle.

They are commonly used to guide:

  • Spare parts decisions

Criticality is not a permanent attribute. Equipment condition changes, operating requirements evolve and facilities introduce modifications that can alter the importance of an asset.

For this reason, criticality assessments are periodically reviewed so they continue to reflect the current operating environment, existing regulatory requirements and current asset configuration. Maintaining current criticality information helps organizations make decisions using risk that reflects today’s conditions rather than past assumptions.
